I recently spent some time thinking about hawkbill blades and came to the conclusion that the aggressively ugly styling and my preconceived opinions may have turned me away from what could be a truly great blade pattern for EDC & Tactical uses.
Especially in the form of the.
First of all, lets be honest. If you like the Spydie way of doing things then this knife is just truly epic, it is made out of H1 “steel” which is rustFREE not stainless & with those pure utilitarian curves I cant help but respect it.
So to get over my natural aversion to all blades bent I did a pros and cons list:
Pros
Great quality/cost ratio ($120 MSRP! ).
One hell of a pull slicer.
Rust proof.
Better than sliced bread (it can slice bread).
Good ergonomics.
Nice natural tactical uses (feels right in the hand).
Versatile.
Yellow.
Just damn cool.
Cons
Yellow.
Bad social stigma “evil blade”.
Not enough belly to dress game easily (but its totally doable).
Pinned construction (but that goes for all of Spyderco’s Salt series).
I have always been a “hawkbills are toys” kinda guy but now I am really giving it due consideration. Color me surprised.
What do you guys think?
Some time ago a fantastically talented guy called Tomso designed and rendered a folder prototype, originally the folders future was mere hyperbole and conjecture but with a recent confirmation by Mike on the forums it looks like the rat folder will be launching eventually.
No doubt some things will be modified but we do know that it will most likely be American made, with D2 steel and a stainless framelock.
I cant wait for this knife, I love the full flat ground blade and the carabiner/low rider clip combo. Really smooth and extremely versatile for us outdoors type & of course D2 is a fantastic semi-stainless steel for small blades.
First of all an exciting sprint run- the Spyderco military with an M4 blade, G-10 grips and a titanium framelock, we can assume that the framelock is ninja’d from the up and coming Ti Millie. It is definantly a sprint run of 500 made exclusively for knifeworks.com .
Really exciting stuff, we are told that there are only about 300 remaining from the pre-order page so if you want one then get one now! MSRP is $299 but will sell around $200.
Unfortunately I live in a tropical country and M4 steel just doesnt play nice in that kind of environment .
No pictures yet.
Spyderco H1 Warrior
Damn sexy knife, made out of tough RUST FREE H1 steel/ceramic its just a fantastic option for a survival/zombie apocalypse edged tool.
I love everything about it except the serrations on the spine and for me thats a deal breaker!
The Spyderco Warrior is based on the Al Mar & REKAT “Hobbit” and it replicates the original quite nicely. The lead designer on the Warrior was Guy Rafaeli who is a teacher of the Israeli Navy Seals, he unsurprisingly specializes in Bladecraft .
Its a solid looking knife with 4mm H1 stock and I truly hope Sal releases a version without the serrations. Although that’s unlikely to happen I guess I can still hope.
MSRP is $399.95 and it will sell at $250.
Blade Steel: H-1

Spyderco Honeybee
The Honeybee is the latest addition to the Spyderco “SLIPIT” non locking folder line. It is basically a slightly bigger version of the - and thats really quite small (but not tiny like the bug) .
Not much to say about it, Cheap, light and effective. The steel used is not bad and from personal experience with the bug I can expect a pleasing diminutive throw folder that I can give to non knife people without worrying about them prying with my BG-42 millie.
MSRP: $9.95 and it will sell for around $9 Get it.
Blade Steel: 3Cr13MoV
Weight: 0.4 oz. (12 g)
Handle Material: Stainless Steel

Spyderco Dragonfly Tattoo
Really not my sort of knife, I dont like colours other than Foliage green and blaze orange, I dont like pretty motifs, I dont like all steel handles and I dont like backlocks.
I guess the Spydie dragonfly “Tattoo” just isn’t for me then , its a regular production not a sprint so no worries about getting it as soon as possible (should you want it).
MSRP: $99.95 & will be selling around $65!

Spyderco Meerkat
A pretty good looking folder, with a seriously unusual lock. The phantom lock is released by squeezing/pulling on the scales were “MeerKat” is imprinted. This feature makes it quite unique amongst the Spyderco line up and its well worth checking out for that reason alone.
It comes with a really low riding wire clip & couple with the diminutive size it makes for a really discreet edc knife.
This is a sprint run of an old discontinued model ( ) , I am not sure about the number in which it will be produced but I would imagine 500-1200 based on past Spyderco history. I imagine it will become somewhat collectable in the future although not in the same league as the which is a truly epic knife that was recently discontinued (I cant resist promoting it!) As far as I can tell the only difference between the old model and this one are the colours of the scales & the knife steel used (Aus-6(old) vs VG10(new) ).
MSRP: $89.95 and you will be able to pick one up for around $60! (A great deal!).
Blade Steel: VG-10 Flat ground
Handle: Blue Gray FRN
Edge: Plain
Lock: Phantom Lock
Clip: Right/Left Tip Down
Spyderco Ladybug Hawkbill bladen Pattern Variant
The final confirmed shipping Spydie is the now familiar with a new spin, that sexy Hawkbill aggressive pattern, apart from being a great little edc for pull cutting I would imagine it would make a good last ditch self defense blade. It is a sprint run and no doubt will be popular both for the price point it will be selling at & the unusual blade shape so snap one up if you want it. No idea on the numbers Spyderco will produce it but again I would imagine 500-1200 based on previous sprint runs. Possible more taking into account the cost.
I no longer purchase or covet frn handled Spydies and have a serious dislike for pinned construction & backlocks ( is an exception to the rule ) so I wont be looking into picking the Ladybug up however thats based on my personal tastes- its a great deal for a great knife.
MSRP: $44.95 and you can walk out with one for about $30!

Very sad news although much needed. Sal & Co. need to trim down the catalog to make room for some exciting new tools for next year!
The ones are that are in bold are the one I will really miss the most, some great designs from the minds of Sal & Ed Schempp
Some are really surprising like the (Picture above) which is a really smooth utilitarian blade with really great potential. I dont own one and dont really have any drive to go out and get one simply because the Caly 3 Carbon Fiber & ZDP-189 is still in production and will remain in the line up for 2010 ( ). But its definitely a shocker and down the road will sorely be missed.
Hopefully the Caly 3 will come back with different scales and a screw construction (instead of evil pins).
This knife is in my opinion one of the most forward thinking folders of recent times. Its got a crazy comfortable foliage grind G-10 grips with a killer forward balance (add 20cm to the blade and you have a natural born chopper!) . Everything about this knife screams utilitarian. Awesome dicer, cutter and slicer from cardboard to food preparation in the kitchen.
And as Nutnfancy so eloquently said in his its also a killer tactical knife. I just know that in 1 or 2 years this knife will be a grail for alot of Spydie fanatics. Hopefully Sal will decide to resurrect it in a later sprint run (Blaze orange G-10 grips? ).
Going to write up a post in a few days on the future Spyderco’s that we know (for a fact) are coming soon.
